Restaurant Association of Nova Scotia supports Government’s online inspection reports
(Halifax, NS) – The Restaurant Association of Nova Scotia (RANS) is supporting the online posting of restaurant inspection reports, a project launched by Government’s Food Protection and Enforcement division of the Department of Agriculture earlier today at One Government Place to promote transparency in the consumer marketplace.
Gordon Stewart, executive director of RANS, attended the launch and says their support of the online reporting system demonstrates the industry’s willingness to fully disclose information to the public and the Government’s action to ensure consumers are well informed about the food and beverage sector.
“Our association always advocates open and transparent business practices and the inclusion of online inspection reports is a welcome addition to our industry and the marketplace,” says Stewart. “Allowing consumers access to information is a right that they deserve and our industry is happy to oblige.”
Michael Horwich, Director of Food Protection and Enforcement, Department of Agriculture, led the way for the online inspections reports and engaged many stakeholders, including RANS, in preliminary discussions about what the reports would communicate and how they would do so.
“Michael Horwich was very open about the process and included RANS in the formation of these reports, including discussions with our Board that led to the uptake of some of our recommendations,” says Tanya Braine, head of Government Affairs for RANS. “We are pleased with the outcome and support the Department fully on this initiative.”
Online inspection reports will communicate the current status of a restaurant in the province with respect to any infractions (from minor to major) and the operator’s expedient action to correct them in a timely fashion.
The Restaurant Association of Nova Scotia (RANS) is a non-profit association that seeks to promote the food and beverage sector and to positively impact the operating environment of the industry. Through government advocacy, marketing and promotion, education and outreach, RANS has successfully represented the food and beverage sector since 1947.
