Simon Rafuse Joins Blomidon Estate Winemaking Team

Habitant, Nova Scotia- Blomidon Estate Winery is pleased to announce that Simon Rafuse has joined their winemaking team as associate winemaker. Simon is a native Nova Scotian who has travelled the world for his wine education and work experience, but is excited to be home working in the industry.

“I first heard about Blomidon Estate Winery a few years ago when they released the first Nova Scotia grown Chardonnay,” says Rafuse. “However it wasn’t until I tried a bottle of the 2006 with friends that I realized the huge potential for Nova Scotia wine.”

Evidence of Nova Scotia’s potential has been apparent for the last few years in national wine competitions where the industry has been increasing their medal count each year. Blomidon Winery achieved a very significant milestone in 2009 when their 2007 Reserve Chardonnay captured a medal at the All Canadian Wine Championships. They are the first winery outside of British Columbia or Ontario to win a national award in the Chardonnay category.

Rafuse’s work and educational experience is impressive. He is bilingual in French and English and has a Master of Science Degree from the University of Kent, United Kingdom and a Master of Viticulture and Oenology, from Montpellier SupAgro (Ecole Nationale Superieure Agronomique de Montpellier), France. His work experience includes Chateau de Lancyre (Lanquedoc-Roussillon, France), Domaine Zind-Humbrecht (Alsace, France) and most recently in Central Otago, New Zealand at William Hill Winery.

“The Nova Scotia climate is perfect for a number of wine styles, from our excellent local varietals like L’Acadie Blanc and well-suited international varietals such as Chardonnay and Pinot Noir,” says Rafuse. “I’m incredibly excited to join the winemaking team here at Blomidon Estate Winery and to help craft great Nova Scotia wines both now and in the future!”

Blomidon Estate Winery is a 10 hectare boutique winery located along the shore of the Minas Basin near Canning, Nova Scotia. For more information about the winery visit www.blomidonwine.com.
