Month-over-Month (December 2022 vs November 2022, seasonally adjusted)

Nova Scotia food services and drinking places receipts increased 0.6% to $172.5 million. Canada's food services and drinking places receipts increased 1.0% to $7.3 billion. All provinces reported monthly increases in receipts for food services and drinking places, with Newfoundland and Labrador reporting the largest gain and Manitoba recording the smallest gain.
Year-over-year (December 2022 vs December 2021)

Nova Scotia food services and drinking places receipts increased 22.2%. Canada's food services and drinking places receipts increased 21.3%. All provinces reported year-over-year increases in food services and drinking place receipts, with Prince Edward Island and Quebec reporting the largest gains. New Brunswick reported the smallest gain.
Annual (2022 vs 2021)

Nova Scotia food services and drinking places receipts increased 19.4%. Canada's food services and drinking places receipts increased 26.5%. In 2022, all provinces reported increases in food services and drinking place receipts compared to 2021, with Ontario and Quebec reporting the largest gains and Newfoundland and Labrador reporting the smallest gain.
Nova Scotia Food Service Receipts

Nova Scotia's 2022 gains in food service receipts are primarily attributable to the increases in limited service eating places as well as full-service restaurants. In percentage terms, however the gains were faster for drinking places and special food services.
Trends

Food services and drinking places have reported repeated downturns during the imposition of COVID restrictions. As these restrictions eased, food service receipts have rebounded, and Nova Scotia has surpassed its pre-pandemic levels.

Nova Scotia food services and drinking places receipts gradually increased from 2010 to 2019 while declined in 2020. Food services and drinking places receipts rebounded in 2021 and continued strong growth in 2022. In 2022, food services and drinking places receipts increased 19.4% to $1.95 billion.

In March 2019, Statistics Canada on a month-over-month basis, reported that food services and drinking places receipts (seasonally adjusted) in Nova Scotia increased 0.1 per cent to $140.1 million over February 2019. Food services and drinking places receipts (seasonally adjusted) in Canada increased 1.2 per cent to $6.2 billion over February 2019. Nine provinces reported monthly increases in Food services and drinking places, with Prince Edward Island (2.7 %) reporting the largest gain, and  Newfoundland and Labrador (-1.5 %) reporting the largest decline in percentage terms.

In March 2019, on a year-over-year basis, food services and drinking places receipts (seasonally adjusted) in Nova Scotia increased 2.2 per cent over March 2018. Food services and drinking places receipts (seasonally adjusted) in Canada increased 4.3 per cent over March 2018. All provinces reported year-over-year increases in Food services and drinking places, with Prince Edward Island (11.3 %) reporting the largest gain and  Newfoundland and Labrador (1.5 %) reporting the smallest gain in percentage terms.

 

Year-to-Date

 


 

In Jan-Mar 2019, on a year-to-date basis, Nova Scotia seasonally adjusted food services and drinking places increased 2.1 per cent ($8.6 million) over Jan-Mar 2018 to $421.3 million. Food services and drinking places receipts (seasonally adjusted) in Canada increased 4.4 per cent ($776.9 million) over Jan-Mar 2018 to $18.4 billion. All provinces reported year-to-date increases in Food services and drinking places, with Prince Edward Island (9.0 %) reporting the largest gain and  Nova Scotia (2.1 %) reporting the smallest gain in percentage terms.

 

Long-run Trend

 


 

Although Nova Scotia’s food service and drinking place receipts exhibit somewhat more volatile growth from one month to the next, the provincial trend was in line with national growth up to 2017. Since 2018 Canada growth has been faster.

Among types of establishments,

 

 

  • Limited-service eating places, accounting for 53% of total food services and drinking places receipts, increased 4.1 per cent ($7.6 million) over Jan-Mar 2018 to $195 million.

 

  • Full-service restaurants (37% of total Food services and drinking places) increased 3.4 per cent ($4.4 million) to $136 million.

 

  • Special food services (8% of total Food services and drinking places) decreased 2.2 per cent ($0.6 million) to $28 million.

 

  • Drinking places -alcoholic beverages (3% of total Food services and drinking places) increased 0.1 per cent ($0.0 million) to $12 million.
